Background

Kitamura was born on May 26, 1972 in Japan.[1][2]

Martial arts training

A member of the Karate-do Zendokai Koganei Dojo (空手道禅道会小金井道場 karate dō zendōkai koganei dōjō?) since 2007, Kitamura joined the gym for dieting purposes since it was in the vicinity of her home and her children had joined the gym two years before her.[2] Kitamura won the 2008 Real Fighting Karate-do 52 kg championship, earning her black belt.[2]

Mixed martial arts career

Having debuted as an amateur at Jewels' event Rough Stone 1st Ring,[3] Kitamura's professional debut took place on July 11, 2009 (2009-07-11) at Jewels 4th Ring, where she defeated winless fighter Harumi via triangle choke submission in the first round.[4]

In her next fight, Kitamura defeated Yoko Kagoshima by referee decision after two rounds at the event Rough Stone 2nd Ring on January 31, 2010 (2010-01-31).[3]

On February 11, 2010 (2010-02-11), Kitamura debuted with the Valkyrie promotion as a late replacement at Valkyrie 04 where she defeated Kimie Okada by TKO (referee stoppage, punches) in the second round.[5]

At Jewels 7th Ring on March 19, 2010 (2010-03-19), Kitamura faced and defeated Joachim Hansen's trainee, Norwegian Celine Haga, in the first round via technical submission after she caught Haga in a Kimura that prompted the referee to stop the fight.[6]

Competing for the first time outside of Japan, at Legends MMA event Lightning at Legends on June 5, 2010 (2010-06-05) in a fight for the Legends MMA title, Kitamura suffered her first professional loss when she was defeated by American Sally Krumdiack via TKO in the first round. Krumdiack punished Kitamura with elbows (not allowed in Japan) that prompted Kitamura's corner to throw in the towel to stop the fight.[7]

During the 2010 Jewels -52 kg Rough Stone Grand Prix semi-finals, Kitamura defeated Abe Ani Combat Club fighter Rina Tomita by unanimous decision at Jewels 10th Ring on October 10, 2010 (2010-10-10).[8]

At Jewels 11th Ring on December 17, 2010 (2010-12-17), Kitamura defeated pro-wrestler Mai Ichii by unanimous decision in the final of the 2010 Jewels -52 kg Rough Stone Grand Prix, winning the tournament.[9]
